About the Traditional Latin Mass

The Traditional Latin Mass also goes by other names: Tridentine Mass, Extraordinary Form Mass, Mass of St. Pius V, Usus Antiquior. It is the form of Mass that was used throughout the Latin Rite of the Catholic Church until 1969, and which still continues to be used by numerous parishes, congregations and religious orders around the world.

It is the form of Mass that was brought by the first Catholic missionaries to Uganda, and was attended by the martyrs of Uganda. The Traditional Latin Mass differs in many ways from the Novus Ordo Missae, or “New Mass” promulgated by pope Paul VI in 1969, which can also be celebrated in latin.

History of the Traditional Latin Mass in Uganda

The Traditional Latin Mass was always celebrated in Uganda before 1965. The early catholic church fathers that brought the faith to Uganda and the first cardinals all celebrated the traditional catholic latin mass. Fr Christophe Nouveau the current house superior has spent time studying the history of this timeless and beautiful mass.

About the Institute of the Good Shepherd

Founded in 2006, the Institute of the Good Shepherd is a congregation of priests and seminarians dedicated to serving the Church by the transmission of the traditional latin liturgy and by teaching and preaching catholic doctrine, in fidelity to the Church's Tradition and in obedience to the Church's Magisterium.
